Understand why risk matters

⚖️

Overview

The Risk card game gets individuals and teams to reflect on the risks your business is exposed to and how to look at the evaluation of risk beyond a simple 'high / medim /low' classification.

Target Audience

Ideal for professionals at all levels, from new hires to senior management. Particularly valuable for teams in finance, law, healthcare, and any industry where ethical decision-making is critical to success.

Understand the risks your firm faces and how to evaluate the level of risk.

The game

With each round, the group is presented with a potential risk vector and each member of the group thinks of how this risk could crystalise to the company. The group then discuss these crystalised risks and to agree the scale of each one.

The game is played in teams, with a facilitator guiding discussions and highlighting key learning points. Sessions typically last 60-90 minutes, making it perfect for training workshops or team meetings.

Learning Outcomes

After playing the Risk card game, participants will be able to:

  • Recognise Risk Vectors: Identify how different risks can impact the firm
  • Evaluate level of risk: Quantify the potential impact of a risk to the firm
  • Consider Multiple Perspectives: Understand how different stakeholders might view the same situation
  • Articulate Reasoning: Clearly explain how risk can impact the firm
  • Build Risk Culture: Contribute to creating a workplace environment where risks are valued and discussed openly

Why This Game Works

Risk is often seen as an abstract topic that can feel disconnected from daily work. The Risk card game succeeds because it:

Creates Safe Practice Space: Players can explore different areas of risk without real-world consequences, building confidence for when they face similar situations in their work.

Encourages Discussion: The game format naturally promotes dialogue and debate, helping teams develop a shared understanding of ethical standards and expectations.

Reveals Complexity: By presenting nuanced scenarios, the game shows that risks can develop in often unexpected ways.

Builds Muscle Memory: Repeated practice with ethical reasoning helps participants develop instincts and frameworks they can apply when facing real dilemmas.

Engages Emotions: The scenarios are designed to be thought-provoking and sometimes uncomfortable, creating the emotional engagement that drives learning and retention.

Transfers to Reality: The situations in the game mirror real workplace challenges, ensuring that lessons learned are immediately applicable to participants’ daily work.

The Risk card game transforms the, often abstract, concept of risk into concrete, memorable learning experiences that genuinely change how people think about how risks can crystalise in daily work.
